Emergency Management

The purpose of Emergency Management is to organize and manage the City’s resources in a way that will reduce the harmful effects of all hazardous conditions and natural disasters. 

The Emergency Management Coordinator is responsible for continuing operations during disasters, maintaining inter-local agreements for resource utilization, communication with State and Federal agencies, and providing education and training for the City of Highland Village staff.

The National Weather Service has designated Highland Village as a “StormReady Community.”  This is a grassroots approach to help communities develop plans to handle all types of extreme weather.  In order to be qualified as “StormReady,” the community must:

  • Establish a 24-hour warning point and emergency operations center
  • Have more than one way to receive severe weather warnings and forecasts and to alert the public
  • Create a system that monitors weather conditions locally
  • Promote the importance of public readiness through community seminars
  • Develop a formal hazardous weather plan, which includes training severe weather spotters and holding emergency exercises
Storm Ready
Outdoor warning sirens are part of the City of Highland Village’s emergency management plan. The City has five outdoor warning sirens which are designed to notify residents when there is severe weather or a civil defense emergency.  The sirens are not intended to alert those who are within a home or other structure.  These sirens are tested the first Wednesday of each month at 1:00 pm weather permitting. This ensures that the system is functioning correctly.

The City also has a mass notification system for citizens.  CivicReady is a communication service that sends immediate alerts to Highland Village citizens that subscribe to the system.  These alerts include severe weather alerts, missing persons, evacuations, and other City information that might be of interest.
